My Thoughts on ‘Blitzball,’ the Book Instagrammers are Raving About

As a fan of young adult dystopian books and YA in general, I was curious to read the book that a lot of influencers are posting about.

In “Blitzball,” by Barton Ludwig, a popular book that speaks out against racism, a high school soccer star is shocked to learn that he’s literally the clone of Hitler. Imagine finding out that your parents want you to be some evil dude when all you want to do is be a teenager? That’s one effed up situation … yet hilarious.

This book addresses issues of racism which should be addressed more. A lot of people are scared to speak out about such a heavy topic which lends the question, does denying that racism exists prevent it? Or should we actively be able to discuss racism without the fear of censorship?

I think if we tuck something under the rug and pretend it doesn’t exist, we contribute to the problem. For this reason, I LOVE Blitzball. Along with strong dark comedic undertones, “Blitzball” is a serious story that unfolds of one boy’s struggle against the forces that want to turn him into the next Führer. “Blitzball” deals with dark themes but does it in such a way that it makes a strong impact.

At the beginning of the story, Addie is what you’d expect, a racist but through the course of the novel, he grows to become someone better.

I don’t know about you but I’ve been noticing a rise of racists at the same time I’m noticing a lot of people who are acting dare I say this… a bit fascist. For this reason, I think this book couldn’t have come at a more appropriate time.

This is why I think a lot of influencers love this book.

This story could have been told in a way that was preachy but in no way did I feel that it was. Why? Well the plot is very entertaining and it’s character driven.

There were also a ton of laughs. I think a lot of influencers are attracted to this book because of that. Yes, it’s a heavy theme but it’s one presented in a way that’s darkly comedic.

Overall, I found it a very entertaining read and agree with the influencers who LOVED this book as did I. Hopefully someone adapts this into a movie as would like to see it on the screen.
